Vastu Shastra is the traditional system of home designing or architecture, it can be explained as a science of architecture. Vastu defines the complete layout of ground preparation, spatial geometry, measurements and space management. Even Buddhism talks about vastu. These designs integrate with various parts of the structure and various beliefs having yantra, symmetry, and alignments in them. Vastu is an ancient vidya or subject and vastu shastra is the tool of vastu vidya. Inventor or propagator of vastu vidya is considered as Lord Vishwakarma. Vishwakarma was the chief architecture of devtas or the Gods. Vastu is knowledge of the collection of ideas which can be considered with or without the diagrams and these diagrams are not rigid. The vastu suggest designing the things in a proper manner according to their use and function in relationship with the space organization and directions. It even describes what kind of fabric must be used and what the color must be there. It describes the mandir, the houses, cities, towns, roads, the gardens, the workplace and the directions of public areas.

In vastu, while designing a land or plot, the central area of the plot is called mandal or the brahmasthan. This central area has spiritual and ritual significance. The space occupied by it varies in different mandals the pitha they are nine in number, the upapitha they are 25 in number if one square module occupies it than mahaapitha, ugrapitha, and manduka. Pitha is symbolic of prothvimandala and is the central space which is purely occupied by the earth. Among all these mandals the most important mandal which is known is manduka or chandita mandala, this mandala is of 64 square modules. Another important mandal is paramshakya mandala which is of 81 squares.
